The Dance Styles

Salsa

Salsa is a distillation of many Latin and Afro-Caribbean dances. Each played a large part in its evolution. Salsa is usually a partner dance, although there are recognised solo steps and some forms are danced in groups of couples, with frequent exchanges of partner. Improvisation and social dancing are important aspects of Salsa.

Bachata

Bacha is a form of music and dance that originated in the countryside of the Dominican Republic. Its themes are normally romantic, but with hints of heart break and sadness,

Merengue

Merengue was made the offical music and dance of the Domincan Republic.

This is the party dance of the Caribbean Dominican Republic. It’s flirty and it’s fun. A very simple beat with very simple steps means you can be partying on the floor literally as you learn to dance Merengue within less than a minute.

The pattern of moves in Merengue is shared with those of Salsa but, in Merengue, they are slower and easier to pick up. Merengue has become a popular part of any salsa event at any Latino Club night. Partners hold each other in a closed position. the man holds the woman's waist with his right hand while keeping his left hand/her right hand at the woman's eye level. The merengue is a two step beat requireing partners to bend their kness slightly left and right.

Cha Cha Cha

The Cha Cha Cha originates from Cuba. It got it's name from the sound the feet make on the floor as it is danced 'Cha Cha Cha'. Easy and fun to learn to dance.

It has its roots in Mambo and has been adapted and changed over the years. Western Cha Cha is a more stylised version of the original Cuban Cha Cha. An interesting fact about Cha Cha is that Bruce Lee, the movie star famous for his martial arts movies, was the 1955 Hong Kong Cha Cha Cha champion.
